Regulatory changes, population shifts and government investment in housing and infrastructure are among factors driving OEMs to expand capacity to keep up with demand in India, according to a report in Business World India. Regulatory changes are improving accountability and compliance. KONE, Schindler, Johnson Lifts, Otis and Mitsubishi Electric are together investing billions of U.S. dollars into expansion of their facilities to meet demand that is expected to grow from approximately 50,000 to 55,000 units annually to more than 70,000 by 2021. As the industry grows, challenges remain, those interviewed said. These include lack of a uniform safety law across India and a lack of skilled labor.
37-STORY MIXED-USE PLAN BY SOM FOR DOWNTOWN EVANSTON
Nonprofit Northlight Theatre hopes to be the street-level tenant in a proposed 37-story tower designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) in the 1700 block of Sherman Avenue in downtown Evanston, Illinois, theChicago Tribune reports. The plan, which would include a hotel, restaurant, apartments and parking, was unveiled by a team led by Farpoint Development in September. A dilapidated 1926 movie theater on the site would be razed. Farpoint says the building would solidify Evanston's downtown arts district. Northshore would relocate from shared space in the North Shore Center for Performing Arts in Skokie and draw people from throughout the Chicagoland area. The targeted completion is fall 2020.
WOMAN INJURED IN FALL ON INDIAN RAIL STATION ESCALATOR
A woman was injured on September 6 after falling on an escalator at Platform 3 of Tatanagar Station, the second-busiest station in India's South Eastern Railway, the pioneer reports. Both the woman's dupatta and purse strap became stuck in the steps of what she described as an escalator crowded with passengers during morning rush hour, causing her to fall and suffer a wrist injury. Local rail officials are investigating, but the unit remains open. Tatanagar Station, traveled by approximately 50,000 passengers each day, is the second South Eastern Railway station to get escalators after Howrah in Bengal.
FAMILY-OWNED WISCONSIN COMPANY CELEBRATES 60 YEARS
Waupaca Elevator Co. is celebrating 60 years in business in 2017 and plans to mark the milestone with a party at its headquarters in Appleton, Wisconsin, on October 3. Providing residential elevators and residential and commercial dumbwaiters, Waupaca started in Waupaca, Wisconsin, with six employees. Growth necessitated two moves to larger facilities in Appleton, its most recent in 2002. Today, the company has more than 50 employees, and said in a statement it is "glad to be in business in today's ever-changing market, and grateful for the contributions of our employees and dealers."
