MALAYSIAN ACCIDENTS LEAD TO ESCALATOR INSPECTIONS
Authorities in the Malaysian state of Sabah have conducted checks on 332 escalators at shopping malls across the state, Malaysian Digest reports. The Sabah Occupational Safety and Health Department (JKKP) undertook the checks in 2016, even though only two accidents involving children were reported in 2015. JKKP Director Zahari Hitam said the checks were in line with the National Occupational Safety and Health Master Plan for Malaysia 2020. He noted that the severity of the two incidents prompted the inspections, saying, “It should not be taken lightly since both escalator accidents resulted in serious injuries and death.” He added that the accidents mostly involved children under the age of 12 who were not properly supervised by their parents.
