FERRARA APPOINTED TO NEW JERSEY CODE ADVISORY COMMITTEE
Edward Ferrara, vice president of Standard Elevator Corp. of Clifton, New Jersey, has been appointed to the New Jersey Code Advisory Committee by the state Department of Community Affairs' Elevator Safety Unit. The unit registers transportation devices in the state, including hydraulic, traction, winding drum, roped hydraulic, rack-and-pinion and Limited Use/Limited Application elevators; escalators; moving walks; dumbwaiters; wheelchair lifts; chairlifts and personnel lifts. The committee's first meeting is planned at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, on January 6. Ferrara said he is "proud to have been chosen."
NEW ELEVATORS FOR LIRR STATION IN QUEENS, NEW YORK
Hydraulic elevators at each end of the Long Island Rail Road’s (LIRR) Murray Hill Station in Queens, New York, are part of a US$8.6-million Metropolitan Transportation Authority project set to begin in March 2018, the Flushing Patch reports. The Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant units will carry passengers between the street level and platforms and are a first for the station. Part of an ongoing LIRR project that saw ADA-compliant elevators installed at the Flushing-Main Street Station, the renovations will also include electrical upgrades to support the new elevators and elevator signage.
PERMITS FILED FOR 20-STORY BUILDING IN NYC’S CHELSEA NEIGHBORHOOD
New York YIMBY reports that permits have been filed for construction of a 20-story mixed-use building in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City (NYC). The building, which would rise 250 ft., would total 205,960 sq. ft., with 43,520 sq. ft. designated for commercial use and 128,080 sq. ft. for its 38 residential units. The project is being put together by Casco Development Corp., which bought the property for US$50 million in 2014 from the nonprofit Atlantic Foundation. The sale included rebate incentives if the building meets high Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards. The location, at 540 West 21st Street, puts the development near NYC's popular High Line Park. An estimated completion date was not released.
PLANNED TOWER TARGETS EMPTY-NESTERS IN TWIN CITIES SUBURB
A proposed 17-story apartment tower in the Twin Cities suburb of Edina, Minnesota, is targeting well-to-do empty-nesters who are downsizing from family homes, the Star Tribune reports. The building, which would be at the site of a Guitar Center store, is being developed by Lund Real Estate Partners, with design by ESG Architects of Minneapolis. The 300,000-sq.-ft. high rise would include 170 units and such amenities as enclosed parking, a fitness and yoga studio, a clubroom, an outdoor deck and bicycle storage. The location was chosen for its walkability and proximity to shopping and other attractions. The developer hopes to start construction late this year and complete it within 20 months.
RETIREMENT HIGH RISE PLANNED FOR ASU
Oregon-based Pacific Retirement Services (PRS) is planning to build a high-rise senior residential community on the campus of Arizona State University (ASU) in Tempe, Arizona, the Mail Tribune reports. The developer announced it has closed on a US$252-million bond for construction of the 20-story, US$270-million Mirabella at ASU. The novel plan of putting a retirement community on a college campus has proven popular — PRS presold 70% of the 300 units within a four-month period. The location will offer urban access and resort-style amenities, including an indoor pool, a wellness center and a library. Residents will be able to participate in university life, including classes, activities and programs. Completion is scheduled for August 2020.
