HORIZONTAL ELEVATORS IN FUTURISTIC DISPLAY

“The future of city living” was on display last month at the 2018 International Builders’ Show in Orlando. Dallas architecture firm Humphreys and Partners presented its high-rise concept, which features “sideways elevators” not unlike thyssenkrupp’s MULTI. Hypothetically built in Manhattan, the site would also feature apartments with gardens, a high-speed Hyperloop station and landing pads for flying cars. Called “Pier 2,” the concept even includes landing pads for drones. Advanced modular design could cut one-third of the time and 20% of the cost from the construction, while photovoltaic glass alone could save 34% on energy costs, TheJournal.ie reported.

PROPOSED TOWER IN HISTORIC PHILADELPHIA AREA RAISES IRE

A tower proposed on Philadelphia's Jewelers Row, the blocklong area along Sansom Street famous for being the oldest and second-largest diamond district in the U.S., has raised the ire of preservationists, The Architect's Newspaper reports. The SLCE Architects-designed proposal by local developer Toll Brothers has been through several iterations, the latest a sleek, 24-story glassy structure with a few simple setbacks. Building it would require the demolition of several historic structures. Philadelphia Inquirer architecture critic Inga Saffron is one of the most vocal opponents of the plan, describing the potential newcomer as an "architectural zombie" that would be incongruous with its surroundings.

MONTREAL CONDO TOWER BREAKS GROUND AMID OPTIMISM

Cadillac Fairview, Canderel and the Montreal Canadiens have broken ground on the third Tour des Canadiens condominium tower, the 55-story-tall Tour des Canadiens 3 (TD3), in downtown Montreal, SkyRise Cities reports. Buoyed by strong immigration, a thriving information-technology sector and low unemployment, Montreal's real-estate market is healthy, with approximately 1,570 units sold in the fourth quarter of 2017, up 190% from fourth-quarter 2016. Designed by IBI Group with Bélïque Legault Thuot Architects, TD3 will have 565 units and directly connect to public transit. Amenities will include an indoor, Mediterranean-inspired pool and outdoor terrace overlooking the larger Quad Windsor master-planned community.

Developed by Kyren Group and located in Adelaide’s central business district, the tower will also house 83 apartments. Emporis reports it will be served by seven elevators and two escalators.
