ESCALATOR ENTRAPMENT VIDEO SURFACES

Websites such as Pickle are reporting on a late February incident in which a commuter was trapped inside an escalator for more than 1 hr. A video recorded at the Maslak Ayazağa Metro Station in Istanbul has been making the rounds since posted on LiveLeak on March 26. It shows a man falling into “plates on the broken part” of the equipment, a witness said. Though the escalators were not running, having been closed for maintenance, there are discrepancies as to whether warning notices had been posted. Firefighters rescued the man, who suffered a broken arm and lacerations to his limbs.

ESCALATOR ACCIDENT SERVES AS REMINDER TO WEAR SHOES

A South African woman says she feels fortunate her eight-year-old daughter escaped a January escalator mishap with only stitches and a small scar, News 24 reports. The incident occurred in a shopping mall east of Johannesburg, South Africa, when the child boarded the escalator barefoot, and one of her toes became trapped between the edge of the step and the balustrade. The girl’s parents pulled her free and took her to the doctor. The mother says the mishap serves as a reminder to never ride escalators barefoot and, ideally, wear proper footwear.
