STARTUP AIMS TO TURN ELEVATOR CABS INTO FIRE SAFE ROOMS

Within three years, Israeli startup Salamandra Zone aims to partner with an elevator manufacturer to bring its technology known as B-Air to the market, Israel 21c reports. Geared toward high rises, the solution consists of a small device placed on top of an elevator cab that converts toxic gases into breathable air in "nanoseconds," as well as a high-powered fan that prevents smoke from entering the cab and sends cool air into it. The source noted that elevators typically shut off when a fire is detected, but Salamandra Zone wants to turn elevators into "safe rooms" with its system that senses and converts toxic gases, enabling escape. Earlier this year, the company's seven-person staff spent several weeks at Underwriters Laboratories offices in the U.S. to test their equipment.

LONG BEACH MAYOR UNVEILS PLAN FOR CITY’S TALLEST TOWER

A 35-story tower in the Shoreline Gateway development in Long Beach, California, is set to break ground by November, heading toward the title of the city's tallest building, Curbed Los Angeles reports. If a plan unveiled this month by Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia comes to fruition, however, it will not be the tallest for long. Located downtown just north of the World Trade Center, that 40-story plan — West Gateway — includes nearly 700 residential units. The prism-like design is by Long Beach-based Studio One Eleven, and the developer is Trammell Crow Residential subsidiary Maple Multifamily Land. Several shorter, mixed-use buildings would join the main tower.

TALLEST RESIDENTIAL BUILDING IN COPENHAGEN IN THE WORKS

Plans for a 120-m-tall (approximately 36-story) structure that will be the tallest residential tower in Copenhagen, Denmark, are in the works, with civil engineering and construction company Per Aarsleff A/Sannouncing it signed a contract with urban developer Carlsberg Byen P/S. Located in the downtown Carlsberg City District, the tower will have 76,000 m2 for residential use, and there will also be further residential, retail and storage space. Aarsleff and Carlsberg representatives say the planning process has been thorough, open and well-thought-out, promising a successful outcome for the design/build project. Construction will start once design work is complete, with completion anticipated in the first half of 2022.

CAR-LIFT SYSTEM PART OF PROPOSED SURFERS PARADISE PROJECT

An automatic car-lift system that stores cars in 86 s. after drivers exit their vehicles is part of a proposed 31-story residential development on Garfield Terrace in Surfers Paradise, Australia, The Urban Developer reports. ASF Group lodged the application for the slim structure, designed by Blight Rayner with extensive landscape design by Byrns Lardner. The plan includes 50 units, including three, four-bedroom sub-penthouses and one, five-bedroom, three-story penthouse, along with extensive shared amenities. If approved, the tower will join a growing Gold Coast skyline that includes a building in Yuhu Group’s Jewel development that recently topped out at 47 stories.

SALES START IN TALLEST TOWER OF LONDON RESIDENTIAL PROJECT

Sales of the 165 homes in Douglass Tower, the second and, at 30 stories, tallest in the Goodluck Hope development in East London, have launched, and developers are optimistic about the property's future, the South China Morning Post reports. Goodluck Hope is being developed by the Kwok family of Hong Kong in partnership with the Ballymore Group of Ireland. The entire development will contain 804 homes of varying sizes, with prices in Douglass Tower starting at approximately US$510,000. Ballymore said the location on the Thames River in an emerging arts and cultural hub holds appeal for both domestic and Hong Kong buyers. Douglass Tower is scheduled for completion in 2020, and the latter two phases are to be finished in 2021.
