1WTC NEIGHBOR TWO-THIRDS OF WAY TO 912-FT.-TALL PINNACLE

125 Greenwich Street, directly across from One World Trade Center (1WTC) in Downtown New York City, is two-thirds of the way to its 912-ft.-tall, 88-story pinnacle, New York YIMBY reports, with topping out anticipated by March 2019. Developed by Bizzi & Partners and Vector Group, and designed by Rafael Viñoly with curved edges and bare concrete material on its northern and southern sides, the structure will contain 273 condominiums and two stories of retail. It will initially boast views of the Hudson River, but construction of 5WTC promises to reduce them considerably. Completion is slated for 2020.

51-, 40-STORY TOWERS PART OF WINNING PROPOSAL IN HELSINKI

51- and 40-story towers are part of Trigoni, a proposal by Finnish construction giant YIT in partnership with architects Lahdelma & Mahlamäki selected as the winner of an international design competition for the Pasila Tower Area by the Finnish government, the Vancouver Sun is among news outlets to report. Set to start construction by 2021, the development will have nine towers containing office, retail and residential space. With easy access to public transportation and the Helsinki Airport, Pasila is approximately 3 km north of Helsinki's central business district, and promises to help accommodate population growth in "one of the fastest growing metropolises in Europe." The city's population is projected to increase from 1.45 million to 1.8 million by 2050.

MINIMALIST RESIDENTIAL SKYSCRAPER ALMOST COMPLETE IN NYC

New York YIMBY reports that a 42-story, 460-ft.-tall skyscraper at 685 First Avenue in Murray Hill designed by Richard Meier & Partners Architects and developed by Solow Building Co. looks to be complete by the end of the year, with its black, minimalist façade in place and sales launching. Richard Meier told ELEVATOR WORLD that Schindler provided the elevator system. The building will contain 556 residences within 800,000 sq. ft., with 10,000 sq. ft. for ground-level retail. There will be 408 rental units on floors three-27, and nearly 150 for-sale condominiums above. Duplex condominiums on floors 28 and 29 will have private balconies enabled by a horizontal cutout in the façade.

TRANSFORMATIVE LOWER EAST SIDE PROJECT PROGRESSING IN NYC

Essex Crossing, a development that will have 1,000 housing units, as well as office and retail, on six acres on New York City’s (NYC) Lower East Side, is progressing, with excavation for the 14-story, CetraRuddy-designed 202 Broome Street wrapping up and concrete reaching the second floor of the 26-story, Handel Architects-designed 180 Broome Street, New York YIMBY reports. Located next to the Williamsburg Bridge pedestrian walkway entrance, the “transformative” Essex Crossing is set to have nine buildings, the largest of which, the 26-story 125 Delancey, also designed by Handel, has topped out. The developer is Delancey Street Associates, which consists of BFC Partners, L+M Development Partners, Taconic Investment Partners and Goldman Sachs.

PLANS FOR HUDSON’S SITE IN DOWNTOWN DETROIT GET TALLER

A skyscraper being developed by Bedrock LLC in downtown Detroit on the site of the former J.L. Hudson's department store could rise from a planned 800 to 912 ft., Crain's Detroit Business reports. Demolition of an underground parking garage on the Woodward Avenue site is nearly complete, paving the way for a development that will include residences, "possibly a hotel and other uses." Bedrock principal Dan Gilbert said the height increase would allow him to get the most flexibility out of the property. Initially planned at 734 ft. tall, this is the second time the proposed height has increased. If the 912 ft. height is approved, the tower will be one of the tallest in the U.S.
