THYSSENKRUPP’S ROLE IN ICONIC NEW CHINESE BRIDGE

By November, thyssenkrupp plans to have completed installation of 76 escalators and 26 moving walks at the iconic new Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge in China, the world's largest ongoing sea-based construction project that links the Pearl River Delta's three major cities. At 55 km, the bridge will be one of the world's longest, reducing travel times between Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macau. The 102 units are going in at the 500,000-m2 Port of Zhuhai built on an artificial island. Operating in a rough environment, the heavy-duty, corrosion-resistant units are built to withstand moisture, salt and high temperatures. Three regional governments began work on the bridge in 2009, and thyssenkrupp began installation in June 2017.

INTERLIFT COMING UP IN ONE MONTH

AFAG Messen und Ausstellungen GmbH, organizer of Interlift, planned at the Augsburg Exhibition Centre in Augsburg, Germany, on October 17-20, recently stated that elevator companies from 46 countries will be presenting their products and innovations there. It has also confirmed more than 570 elevator companies to exhibit at this year's event, the largest yet. As the directory shows, several Chinese companies will be exhibiting at large stands of their own, rather than be combined with others in a joint booth. AFAG explained the “extensive joint participation of ANICA (Italian Association of Component Manufacturers)” is an indicator of the event being an “indispensable platform.” Finally, it announced focuses of the VFA Forum as "Megacities: The Habitats of the Future” and “Smart Elevators.”

DUBAI INTENSIFIES ESCALATOR SAFETY EFFORTS

The Gulf Today reported the Dubai government has called on owners of buildings, shopping centers and markets to secure their escalators by installing "protection" as part of efforts to reduce accidents resulting from children attempting to hang or climb over them and getting their clothes stuck. The Khaleej Times described the protection as "a cover to protect the upper conveyor belt, and provide the required protection near the beginning part of the conveyor belt.” It was added that escalators, moving walks and conveyor belts must have a certificate of examination and be in compliance with the safety requirements from a company recognized by the Accreditation and Compliance Centre, subject to a periodic renewal. The additional protection is based on Dubai Public Health and Community Safety Local Order No. 11 of 2003.
