HITACHI ESTABLISHES ELEVATOR UNIT IN SOUTH KOREA

Hitachi Ltd. has opened an elevator unit in South Korea, Pulse reports. The company officially launched Hitachi Elevator Korea during a December 4 ceremony at Lotte Hotel in Seoul. Hitachi has been installing elevators in South Korea since 1968, and in 1984 provided elevators for the country's first high-rise building. A Hitachi official said expectations of rapid growth, partly because of changes in safety regulations, led to the establishment of the Korean subsidiary. Korea is Hitachi's third-biggest elevator market, after China and India.

30-STORY RESIDENTIAL TOWERS FOR CANADIAN PORT CITY

The Canadian port city of Hamilton, historically free of skyscrapers, is set to get a pair of 30-story residential towers, the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat reports, citing information from SkyRise Cities. The Labourers' Pension Fund of Central and Eastern Canada is behind the project on the old Kresge's Department Store site at King and Hughson streets. It is set to include 500,000 sq. ft. of residences atop a five-story podium containing 20,000 sq. ft. of retail. Designed by Graziani & Corazza Architects, the project could start construction by summer 2018.
