RESIDENTIAL ELEVATOR BOOM TO ACCOMMODATE BEIJING ELDERLY

District governments in Beijing are subsidizing the construction of hundreds of new residential elevators as the city looks to accommodate its growing elderly population, The Beijinger reports. Approximately 200 new units are planned in nearly 30 neighborhoods in the Haidian District. These units will join 214 elevators in Beijing's northwestern jurisdiction added in 2017. In the Fengtai District, approximately 100 elevators are planned. Often incorporating glass walls and "noiseless" machinery, the elevators are being added to the outsides of apartment buildings originally designed for only a stairwell. Beijing's elderly population is expected to increase from 23% now to 30% of the total population by 2030.

MARYLAND LAW WOULD REQUIRE WITNESS FOR LIFT INSPECTIONS

Maryland Delegate C.T. Wilson has proposed a law that would require state elevator inspectors to be present during inspections, reversing a measure enacted in 2009 to address an inspection backlog that allows non-witness inspections, WUSA Channel 9 reports. The proposed law’s backers say the current law is a “rubber stamp” process that threatens passenger safety, while opponents fear enacting it would result in another backlog and fewer annual inspections. According to the state, four people were injured, and one died while riding an elevator in Maryland between 2010 and 2017.

31-, 49-STORY RESIDENTIAL TOWERS PART OF AMBITIOUS L.A. PLAN

Los Angeles' building boom looks to extend west of downtown, with plans announced for 1111 Sunset, a US$600-million, 1-million-sq.-ft. development that includes 31- and 49-story residential towers, the Los Angeles Times reports. Planned on 5.5 acres between downtown and Dodger Stadium, the "new neighborhood hub" is from developer Palisades and lead architect Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, both of L.A. Besides the residential towers, 1111 Sunset would have a 17-story hotel designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, shops, restaurants, public space and low-rise residences. The plan is making its way through the approval process and has the support of several local lawmakers.
